that getting-old feeling
overheard at mustafa's, over at the stationery section:
A: 喂,你以前有没有放 glue 在你的手上,然后等它干了才慢慢 peel off?
B: 有!很好玩 hor?
i was in two minds as to how to react to this snippet of dialogue: whether to grieve over most Singaporeans' (myself included) ineptitude in both languages, or to reminisce a full 5 seconds about my odd affinity for smearing craft-glue over my palm and peeling it off after it dried.
that was one of my favourite doing-nothing activities between the ages of 7-8.
by simultaneously loving and hating this feeling, i am reluctantly admitting (and reinforcing) my helplessness. i hate it when i'm powerless to change the course of an event which, on hindsight, i'd have no real clue to which i would've liked better.

I used to enjoy it too :) and I know a thirtysomething who still does! But he has upgraded to use Superglue rather than the cheap wet glue we used to have in school.
As for the Chinese-English mix --- aiya, what to do lah.
omg! how does he manage to get the superglue off??! it's nasty on your skin! do you mean white glue, perhaps?
Hahahaha! I find the subject matter of the conversation more amusing than anything else! What a random topic.
I've never done this glue thing before. Hmmm.
hahha i've done this before! it was so fun.. LOL
maoie: try it!! cheap craft glue (from those old stationery shops) is best! spread it on your palm and wait for it to dry before peeling it off, the way you'd peel some face mask. very therapeutic!
fat fingers: welcome back!!! feels good and weird to be back, hey? haha. similar bits of childhood... memories... :D
Haha, I did that too when I was in Pri school!
As for the Chinese-English mix, I guess it has to do with the way languages are taught in school now?
Wouldn't craft glue already be bad for the skin??!
takchek: i reckon it was the way languages were taught in schools all the time! i don't deny the importance of english, and the mother-tongue does not pale in comparison in any conceivable way.
it is a shame, though, that an inherently well-intended edict has caused so much anguish...
LMD: what?! you mean the glue might seep through the pores?? i hope it ain't possible... is it?
