where you'll find me
while driving home a few nights back, i saw the most perfect moon i have seen in a long time. it was immaculately round, milky white, and if i really looked, i could see the american flag staked just a small distance away from one of the craters. a bit more concentration and i could've seen chang-e and her rabbit. i swear. too bad about having to keep my eyes on the road most of the time for the safety of the other passengers in the car.
at the counter of the Asian grocery store today, a cursory glance revealed MOONCAKES! lots of overpriced ones at that, too. but being that starved-of-home-food girl i can sometimes get, i parted [albeit reluctantly at first] with AUD10.50 for a lotus paste-filled mooncake with 1 yolk. which was devoured in one sitting with immense (and almost indecent) delight from the flatmate and myself. accompanied by glasses of oolong tea. aah.
now i am starting to crave for the bing pi ones, wrapped in pandan-flavoured snow skin. anyone knows where to get good ones over here in melbs?
i'll be over the moon then. that's where you'll find me.
with chang-e and her pet rabbit.

the first look at the pic, and i couldn't help myself but to reach for my pack of biskut gula on the table...keke...
mua dun like liking for mooncakes...
but mooncakes and chinese tea..deadly combination..makes me salivate...LOL
eh..but..10.50 seriously too steep sia..
never tried them, but i will take your word that mooncakes are good.
I didn't know Chang-e has a rabbit! Thanks for that bit of culture. That's so cute. Come to think of it, I don't know much about the story apart from the drinking of the elixir and flying to the moon...
re:last post. Conniptions! I know ~exactly~ what I'd do with a backstage pass. Stand in a corner nursing whatever drink is available and stare enviously at whoever's talking to the band. :P
gorgeous Moon, wasn't it? i could really stare at it for hours like a lunatic.
wonder why the Moon never looks so beautiful in Sg.
gutter: too expensive lah. cannot anyhow splurge.
and i want a bing pi one the next time.
kachuaz: what's biskut gula? like those khong guan square biscuits with sugar on top? you mean you'll only eat mooncakes if there's tea around??
kitty: go try! you only live once, y'know. spice up your life! try something new everyday! and i reckon there are some some good asian mooncake shops in NY too!
maoie: chang-e's rabbit is the origin of the rabbit sweet you like to pick up on the streets! *very convincing nod*
yeah. i forgot. you've got the standing-at-the-corner bit all planned out. but what next?! silly maoie! :D what if trent comes and talks to you?
s: well, y'see, i have this theory that... melbs and NZ are closer to the south pole. and the moon likes cool places, so it gravitates towards the poles as well.
whereas singas, just 3ยบ north of the equator, is abhorred by the moon for its heat and humidity. taDAH! and that's why we see a larger, rounder brighter moon. :)
hang on, is that 10 bucks for a box or just ONE mooncake?!! here in WA, they're selling single yokes at 30 per box of 4 and i already feel ripped off...
Dear me, you seem to be getting a lot of spam.
Umm, that stuff about Chang-e and rabbit sweets isn't true is it? *narrows eyes*
If Trent comes to talk to me I will either a)blubber like an idiot or b)run away. And then kick myself for doing so later. :P But maybe I'm giving myself too little credit...
virgin undergrad: that's 10 bucks just for ONE!! so $30 for a box of 4 over in WA is worth it! go and buy!!!
sigh. can't find good bing pi ones here. y'reckon the vietnamese mooncakes taste the same?
maoie: yeah. hots of spam. hence, the word verification option is up! haha! so fun to type in a nonsensical string of letters!
well, if you look closely at e rabbit sweet wrapper, you'll notice the moon in the background. and that's also why the sweet is milky white! :)
damn... in Singapore is super cheap for moon-cake... haha so ex over there lousy!!!
holy crap... little wonder why most ppl find the eastern states so unaffordable, myself included. my fren who's over in UMel for a one sem exchange has to pay like 325 pw for a crappy college run accomodation, and the best part - he actually has to share a room with someone else! WTF.
it's just so ridiculous to pay so much more for crappier food down under. the embitterment of paying 3 bucks for a teh-ice and 3.50 for a bloody can of Yeos soya bean milk still bothers me now.
virgin undergrad: what?! 3.50 for a can of yeo's? i think it's cheaper over here, though i'm not certain by how much. was in perth last month, and i thought prices for asian food/groceries was rather high. other than that, perth was LOVELY.
and yeah, rent in melbs can be a pain in the ass. but i suppose that's because your friend was staying really close to the city, or UMel. oh. college-run accomodation. *that's* why. the trick, if one is willing to room-share, is to check out the notice boards in the local cafes or bookshops. i've seen some rooms in great suburbs going for AUD85 pw.
i saw the photos of your apartment and it looks really nice albeit empty. how much did u pay for rent? i'm paying 125 for the masterbedroom at my place, and though slightly steep, it's still 1/2 of what it would cost for me to reside in college.
virgin undergrad: those were taken when we first moved in! have accumulated a fair amount of junk since then. our apartment is directly opposite monash uni, and it's a brand new development. so for a 2 bdrm place, it's 115pw each (i've got a flatmate). utilities aren't included. but i've got a great view from my balcony!
you're not getting too bad a bad deal yourself, but i'm pretty sure there're cheaper places in perth. are you staying within walking distance from your uni?
yeah i'm staying about a 600m away from the campus. wow! that's a super good deal esp for one so near the campus. so i reckon u study in monash. clayton?
virgin undergrad: wow. AUD125 for a 600m-stroll IS a good deal!
the monash campus is so huge that though we stay directly opposite, it is still a 20-min walk til my flatmate reaches the building she's having lectures in! imagine ngee ann campus four-fold! but i still think mine's a good deal as i like my place to be brand new.
that said, i'm at rmit. in the city. but i don't have to go in everyday. and the air out in the 'burbs is fresher! :) you mentioned you're at a college?
rmit is a city campus right? not unlike SMU i reckon. so shoik, save u the trouble of having to go somewhere specifically for a grocery run. i dunno about melbourne, but public transport here in perth is woeful! i once waited for a bus for an hour and a half during on a sunday, and ended up marooned in fremantle on a sat nite cos' buses end at 9.
i'm studying at UWA. i used to stay in college for my 1st sem here, but it was too expensive so i shifted out.
virgin undergrad: yeah. i heard about perth's slow-until-it-can-go-backwards public buses. thing is, you can always learn to drive! and get a car! :) such a happy possibility compared to crazy skyrocketing cab fares.
UWA is located in the 'burbs, no? crawley. hmmm. so you get pretty decent groceries too? and there are not-too-bad weekend markets around subiaco.
freo is great on a saturday afternoon. heh.
wah sei..we can have a mini talk on perth liao..haha...
biskut gula is those kong guan square biscuits with the sugar sprinkles..keke...
spyda, u at rmit ah..how is the maritime studies there? asking for a friend.
kachuaz: nobody talk to me about melbs! sigh. why am i talking abt perth when i'm not even there?!
i dunno abt maritime-anything! sorry. can check website? i didn't even know there was such a faculty! heh. sorry. if i see anything, i'll let you know.
haha. thanks ah. sorry for the trouble~
