growing old, growing poor

while at the cashier of the supermarket the other day, i saw an old couple paying for their weekly groceries.

what i saw broke my heart.

as they transferred their items from the cart onto the conveyor belt, it became plain that they were not very well-off. in fact, many of the items were tagged with a big DISCOUNT sticker. over here, that means that, either the food is nearing its "use by" date, or there is some defect with it. at any rate, many of their items had the sticker: bread, yoghurt, butter, meat and even fruit. these are things, i would normally take for granted, that are hard to find. with the selective eye that comes with affluence, one gradually plays down on goods with the "buy cheap" stickers, or one would give the discount bins a miss.

over in australia, those on the dole as well as pensioners (i think) collect their money every wednesday. this means there are a lot more "rich" people midweek, spending on booze and well, other stuff. and i've seen many more families bringing their kids out for a meal at mcdonald's on wednesday. more than on any other day in the week.

the dignity of the old couple in paying for their weekly supplies reminded me of the importance of working hard and saving up. a frugal lifestyle could be a virtue. all too often i joke about retiring after my job as a student is done, just to get reminded by bank advertisements with questions like "How much does it take to retire?". the rat race exists so that people can make a living, and hopefully, scrape enough to get by for retirement.

i hope that, when i grow old, the "shit! is this all i have got left in my bank account?" thought will never have the chance to cross my mind. it is a very sobering thought, amidst the winter sales and the flurry of activity that comes with the adrenalin rush of a shopping spree. being self-righteous, i sometimes scoff at hearing of relatives/friends' relatives who blow entire amounts of their CPF savings on overtly extravagant, no holds barred trips to Las Vegas to gamble away the rest of the money, cruises, bungalows, golf club memberships, etc. like, hello? could you please invest or save at least 30% of it first? exercise some restraint, for goodness' sake!

growing old scares me. growing old and poor scares me even more. why do people even grow old??!

people should be born old, then grow young. think of how much more enjoyable life would be if we'd been born with knowledge and a wealth of experience. and struggled to grow into the prime of our career, never again to worry about the sickness that plagues old age? and for people who live a long time, their age would go into the negative integers! now that's a thought! :)

i totally agree with you about not having money later on in life... sometimes when i see these old people around, my heart also does break... and if they are selling tissue paper, i would buy when i got the extra money... i do believe in saving money...
but there is 1 thing i learn...

"Use Money To Love Your Love Ones"

Of course not no holds barred trips and memberships... have some restrain! its impt too! =)

Negative integers? So part of the end of your life would be bouncing around as a zygote? That's a thought alright! *ponders* Sounds quite fun even...

Depressing post by the way...not much to look forward to is there?

pangster: yeah. it's depressing to see old ppl still having to fend for themselves, not being able to relax and enjoy the fruit of old age.

kitty: haha i've never had the chance to vote in my entire life! nobody ever contests for my neighbourhood! everything's too peaceful!

fat fingers: it's a very sobering thought. scary too.

gutter: hmmm. it would definitely be useful to upload a programme so i can kick some serious ass when needed too! but yeah, to be born with experience is a good thing. helps shape your outlook too!

maoie: sorry... blame the depressive state of my mind on the weather! haha! bouncing zygote!! *boing!*

Yes, that scares me too, since I most likely will retire alone. Can you imagine me basking on the streets?

Indeed it sounds very heart-wrenching. But perhaps a little comfort is that they still have each other. Sometimes what does it matter even if they had to eat simply and live even simpler. What matters is they have each other and they are happy.

twit: hmmm... doesn't sound so bad at all when you put it that way. guess it was sweet... both of them doing their grocery shopping together. i want to be able to grow old with someone who still wants to accompany me to the supermarket. after all those years. :)

This is about the bein born old and then grow young bit.

Have you been watching that mercedes commercial too much? If you don't know what I'm talking about then I have oviously been watching too much TV.

It's this ad that says the exact same thing, only it ends with the tagline "then when you are in the prime of your life, you buy a mercedes benz" =)

But yeah I agree with your sentiments, being old AND poor is a terrifying thought.

adinahaes: nah... don't watch much tv. the housemate watches it... for supernanny! but i might've come across that commercial sometime. though the tagline didn't stick, the concept did!

Are you naive? Most discount pouncers are skinflints, that's all.
They've got dough alright, don't worry!

The joke is with the system; you work and save and pay interest for 30-40 years, then just when you're comfortably off, everyone wants you to die.

Being poor is bad, whatever your age, but it's worst of all for the young.

r h: really? y'reckon? *phew* guess i must be pretty gullible, then! it's good to know the elderly can afford their daily necessities.

and yeah, i know what you mean. wish we had the money to enjoy ourselves when we're young, so we don't have to be decrepit before we have some cash to lavish on ourselves! but sometimes, enjoying non-cash-related stuff is best done young...

Some are old before their time; dividend fiends in their thirties, they've got no youth at all, just two or three houses.

Spending is being young. That's what youth does.

Use upper case. this way is silly.

This is a great post. The thought of growing old andnot having enough in the bank account after retirement worries me too...The worst situation would be this: old, poor, and struck by illness...

The big affliction among old people is loneliness.

And so, what are relatives good for? Well the answer might be nothing - if you've nothing to leave them.

Bet on it.

r h: i personally know some really extravagant old folks! still, it is always good to have some cash to buy stuff to make one happy, even if it is only temporary. as is life.

gosh. you're one cynical chap. same thoughts, though, about relatives only bothering when there is something in it for them. i hate it when people act piously sad and reproachful at funerals... especially when they never cared when the deceased was alive.

heavenly sword: thanks. but also, depressing. the thought of being old, poor and sick makes me want to die by the time i'm 50!

Old age frightens everyone, but it's unlikely you'll be miserable. Don't worry about things like that.
Old age is when you can get a good laugh. You'll be a free-thinker then; your own person; more than at any time in your life.

r h: that's the way you plan to age? it's good to plan right now, so your mind can go on autopilot when the time comes. 2nd nature. i think i'll be looking forward to that!

Look at fashion. Look at the seventies, and eighties - and have a laugh. And what about the sixties, would you want to look that pathetic?
People are pathetic now, and don't know it. All those woman-pleasers: balding men with shaven heads, and other donkeys with lower-lip fuzz...They'll look a joke in ten years.
Have a look at some old advertising; a housewife getting estatic over some nineteen-seventy kitchen appliance, an entire family looking smug inside a HR Holden!

When you're old, watch the young folk strive, fret, worry their lives away. Poor dears.
It's funny alright, and one shouldn't laugh, but what can you do?

r h: met a really down-to-earth nana last week. and she had had a good laugh at the strivings/anxieties of today's young. plus, she could laugh in the face of her own death. she has her heart in the right place, she does.

Your own past can imprison you, if you let it. I saw rotten behaviour very early in life. And later on, it got me down. But I'm beginning to see the joke now, and that's a marvellous freedom.
Human beings are ridiculous. Absurd. Laughable. Selfishness gets them that way. But no matter what they do to you, if you can see the comedy, you'll be all right. There's always comedy in it.
